Investing to make roads safer will save far more money than it costs
· For every $1 invested in fixing a black
  spot, $14 is saved
· Nearly 40% of deaths are the result of
  hitting roadside objects such as trees or
  poles which are easily protected using
  guard rails

Each year in Australia:
· 600,000 reported road crashes
· 1,600 people killed in road crashes
· 200,000 reported injuries
· 22,000 serious injuries requiring long term
  care and treatment

Each fatal accident costs $1.7million
· A cost of $40million per day to Australia
· $17billion annually – more than the defence budget!

In the next 24 hours:
· 4,800 Australians will be involved in a road crash
· 550 will be injured
· 5 people will die
